The Other side of Midnight : Music for the 11th Hour : 23ji no ongaku

With biased view belongs the first official biased review!

The cd of choice is 'Music for the 11th Hour' the soundtrack of the J-drama 'The other side of Midnight' based on the book by Sidney Sheldon.
The soundtrack covering 14 tracks has been composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno and 4 songs are sung by Maaya Sakamoto in english. I have never seen the drama and am (to say the least) quite curious now.

Yoko Kanno is in my opinion one of the best composers around, multi talented in various music genres she can make any anime shine with the music she composes. Maaya Sakamoto is a great singer with a voice that can be easily recognized and has the ability to make any dreary day flower (expl: Kuuki to Hoshi).
Lyrics of 3 songs sung by Maaya are written by Tim Jensen, this is the guy that's responsible for a few very memorable songs in Cowboy Bebop namely 'Blue', 'Call me, call me' and 'Rain' and other soundtracks composed by Yoko Kanno. The booklet features all the english lyrics.

::01 Two Things
The cd opens with a kinda jazzy tune, not one of my favourites, it has a good 'swing feel' though.

::02 Here
I actually downloaded this song, you could say this is what made me buy the cd.
A slow guitar ballad sung by Maaya Sakamoto.
Excerpt:
"Here, People hide in darkness,
Watching their shadows grow,
Tears of gold or nothing matters
Selling themselves out short,"

Really like this song. :)

::03 Daniel
This surely is my favourite song. Also sung by Maaya.
After I heard it once, I was humming the tune.
The song is touching and forms a perfect balance with the instruments, mainly guitar and (electronic) drums.
Excerpt:
"There was a time when our lives where so free,
Now just another show,
Innocent days slipping far away"

I advise you to close your eyes and listen.

::04 Pepper Stretch
Opens with a slow Drum & Bass instrumental sequence then changes into a full vocal assault (that's a good thing) to go back to D&B. Song takes some getting used to, but the vocals make it an enjoyable track none the less.

::05 Kissing the Christmas Killer
Piano and vocals accompanied with strings, dominate this track.
It's quite sad and the image of snow falling on a lonely person pops in my mind though it never get sentimental.

::06 Trust me
Sounds like a (long) interlude somehow. Vocals consist of slow repeating lyrics. Soothing tune.

::07 Noel
Instrumental track with accents on a sort of Spanish sounding guitar intertwined with piano and strings.

::08 Fad
Guitars and lot's of strings. Not sure what language is being sung, ^-^;;
sounds like a combination of French and Japanese..it's a good track none the less!

::09 Tarkan
Tribal induced track with male vocals.

::10 Penguin Shurinin
Opens strangely with what sounds to me like some sort of trumpets, then goes with a tribal drumming beat. Renewing but not really my choice of listening pleasure.

::11 Mujouken Spectrum
Drum Bass intro that weaves into strings, takes the unconvential route of electronic keys and takes a pretty turn into vocals. Very good track that shows Yoko Kanno's talent of combining different styles of music.

::12 Toto
Another track sung by Maaya. Music starts out simple becoming a solid whole with Maaya's voice.
Excerpt:
"If you turn fast enough,
Then maybe you'll catch yourself,
And try to see things as they are,
Open your eyes,"

Enjoyable track!

::13 Kajitsu no knife no shi
Piano sequence

::14 Noel no piano
Also a Piano sequence although slower then 13 and with more melody.

Well, what are you waiting for? Buy it!
I may sound like a commercial ad, but I'm very very pleased with my cd ^_^.
